Black and white drawing by American political cartoonist George Yost Coffin (1850-1896). <br /><br />Image features a woman wearing stars and stripes holding a candle to a mirror on Halloween night to learn the identity of her future spouse; the face revealed in the mirror is that of 1896 presidential candidate William McKinley. Cartoon serves as a comment on the presidential campaign of McKinley and the presumed outcome of the forthcoming election. The use of the Halloween/mirror image in this way suggests a broad cultural familiarity with the associated fortune telling game and how it was commonly depicted during this period. Nancy Billings made this chuppah (wedding canopy) for her daughter's wedding as a family heirloom that could be used for many generations. For this chuppah to be special to each couple, she embroidered leaves with each bride and groom’s names. She did this so that all the couples who get married under this chuppah will know its heritage.
