Black and white drawing by American political cartoonist George Yost Coffin (1850-1896). <br /><br />Image features a woman wearing stars and stripes holding a candle to a mirror on Halloween night to learn the identity of her future spouse; the face revealed in the mirror is that of 1896 presidential candidate William McKinley. Cartoon serves as a comment on the presidential campaign of McKinley and the presumed outcome of the forthcoming election. The use of the Halloween/mirror image in this way suggests a broad cultural familiarity with the associated fortune telling game and how it was commonly depicted during this period. Published in Washington Post on October 31, 1896. Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division.
